Geology Questions

Recommended Posts

I joked that the nuggets from my Xmas exploration must be from the PegLeg black nuggets legend because they had a black coating on them. I cleaned them up some and used a cheapo magnifying glass to reexamine them today. The black coating I saw is actually attached host rock. There is no visible quartz on them, just this jet black rock that seems to have very fine grained crystals.

Given this limited information what is the black stuff likely to be? How do I look for its source?

don't know about the source of the gold, but the copy sure sells a lot of books I bet. In old copies of Desert Magazine, there have been 3 sites for pegleg gold. One is on a bombing range NE of Calipatria; a second is in the area of Ocotillo Wells, in the plains and up into the mountains NW; and the third is a hill now located in a naval bombing range roughly between westmoreland and Salton City, along the SW portion of the Salton Sea.

Signal mtn, in Mexico, along a nortorious narco corridor now, has been the site of an old gold cache.

the sands of gold blasted shut are pretty much attributed to being Kokoweef caverns, now under exploration by Larry Hahn, a las vegas surplus merchandiser.

the ship of gold has also been profiled in Desert Magazine. though out of print, one can find copies for sale on Ebay.

I have a pegleg nugget, though mine is rounded and and without the rough character of the one shown above. without giving specifics, mine was found in the area of- oh I guess that would be giving it away afterall. no really, out in the desert near ocotillo wells. it is a nodule about 1 1/4 ozs, now in a safe deposit box with other doodads of exploration and discovery. no pic, sorry

Thanks for the info

Interesting stuff. The ones I found are a long way from Ocotillo Wells and they're not really coated with black, its more like attached vein material that is jet black with very fine shiny crystals.

Whats4supper,

That one you have sounds much more like all I have read of the Pegleg stories.

I like the account in a Desert Magazine from the '60's where the fellow who discovered first a few nuggets

when out on a hike, and then on later trips quite a lot more gold.

He sent in a couple of them to C. Pepper along with the story.

It was a believable account written by a very smart guy.

The story is without peer imho.

Flak
