Elko Nevada

I have not heard of many people finding any gold with metal detectors in that area of Nevada. I think most of the gold is microscopic and is locked up in the sulfied of the host rock. The guy that would know is Chris Ralph and I think he may be at an gold show or he would have posted on this by now. Give him some time and I think he will add his thoughts. I think areas more suitable for detecting are areas around Ryepatch, placeretes, Sawtooth and scocia. Most of these areas our north of Lovelock. Hows that GP3000 doing for you?

Take care, Wes

The 3000 is great I've found gold every time I have took it out so far. So with that said I have a skunk to look foward to next trip :spank: . My dad works at a gold mine up there I think it is called Newmont or something like that. Well thanks for the info I guess I will stick to shooting coyotes when I go up there and leave the Minelab at home.

If you can leave yourself enough time and stop at ryepatch you can get some detecting in, its not that far from the ryepatch recreation area. Newmont yep thats just one of the big mines that are there. I here they have a nice tour of the mine. How does your dad like the Elko area? I was looking at that area a few years ago as a place to move to and get out of california. The wife didn't like it, she said its to far away from everything and I said thats the point. She didn't buy it. I'm working on the Winemmucca area now since it is a little closer to a large city.

Wes,

I'm heading to Rye Patch the first week of June. I got an SD2200V2 from Gerry's Detectors in Boise and I have a 3 day field trip then. Are all the good spots surrounding the Winnemucca area private property or claims, or is there some BLM property around that is open to prospecting? Aside from the mine giving tours, is all the property surrounding it private property? Thanks.

I have been there several times over the past ten years far less than other areas I hunt. I have to admit I do not know that area all that well other to say that the area is mixed with private sections and BLM section and railroad land. Off the top of my head I do not know the section numbers of who owns what. The guy who has better knoweldge of the area is Chris Ralph, he is out of Reno. He use to have section on his website about that area. I have to look up his website and then I send it to you. The site is www.nevada-outback-gems.com. I think the info is on this site, good luck. Chris would probably chime in but I think he is at a gold show.

Wes,

Is Rye Patch one of the better spots in Northern Nevada to nugget hunt? Since my field training is there, should I just stay in Imlay and make daily trips? The person who is holding the field training knows the area fairly well as this is the area he holds the majority of his field training, but I

Wes,

Gerry McMullen of Gerry's Detectors out of Boise ID. He gives the most bang for the buck and I email several people who have gotten training from him and they have done very well. I was thinking about going to Stanton this May, but have decided I can stay in the Rye Patch area for two weeks cheaper than staying in Stanton for one week. I have a Gold Bug 2 and just ordered the SD2200V2, which should give me the best of both detecting worlds.

Ya when I have gone there I have usually stayed at the motel there at the truck stop at Mill City. Coming from Winemmucca its before you get to Imlay. Who are you getting your class from?

You'll like the 2200, I had one years ago and did very well with it. Wish I still had one. Ryepatch has gotten worked over a lot over the years but there is still some gold there you don't ever get it all. Gerry's out of Idaho, how far do you have to come from to get to Ryepatch? If your going to stay for two weeks and have an RV there is an Rv camp at the Ryepatch exit or just stay out on the diggings. That would be the least expensive. When are you going to be there, maybe I'll come over the hill for some detecting and we can meet, I haven't been there in a while.

Wes,

I'm coming from Security Colorado which is just south of Colorado Springs, and I'll be there 5-7 June for the training and about a week and a half on my own. No, I don't have an RV, so I will stay at a cheap hotel/motel nearby. Renting an RV is fairly expensive and staying at Stanton is very expensive, so it's worth the trouble to drive a couple thousand miles roundtrip. If you happen to make it out, be sure to say hi.

Boy your coming a long way. It will probably be pretty hot in june out there so bring a lot to drink. Make sure you have a good spare tire and if you plan on doing any exploring you might want two spares. The area is well known for getting flat tires. I'll see what my plans are for then and maybe I'll make the trip. What kind of vehicle should I be looking for? If I go I will probably stay at Mill City truck stop. It use to be a super 8 motel, not sure if it still is.

Take care, Wes

Wes,

You travel a long way for good training and I think I'm getting the best, plus I need a vacation. I retired last May and am getting tired of not doing much. I have a hydration backpack, so I shouldn't have a problem with water. Rather than have the extra weight, I'll stop at the Wal-Mart in Winnemucca and get some. I'm driving a 2008 Subaru Outback wagon. I'll check out having innertubes inserted before I leave or have some slime protection put in the tires. Are the flats due to sharp rocks or thorney stickers. I'm going to check hotel/motel rates on-line and see what they want. Possibly see ya in June.

Pat the flats are mostly due to the sharp rocks and they tear the tire up pretty bad, however there is a lot of metal junk also. My friend got one of those flat wrench screw driver tools in a tire one time. I don't think a tube will do much. I tore up a brand new 6 ply truck tire on one trip, of course I was doing 70mph and when it went speed was a factor. Just make sure you don't have one of those little weight saver spares there useless out there. If your down around Colorado Springs you'll probably want to come out highway 50 to 70 and then split off on 50 in Utah at I-15. Its a nice ride and I think more scenic that interstate 80. I use to go Elk hunting south of Salida out of Villa Grove. Anyway I'll keep the date in mind and see if I can make it out there.

Wes,

Callen my local junk yard for Subaru's and am told 16" plain jane steel rims will fit just fine (have 17 alloy on now). Am waiting for a call back to see if any are in stock. If so, will get some used tires to fit and will be all set. Was told tubes would be a waste of time and slime will make the tires unbalanced. I'll just drive slow and easy on those roads. Thanks for the tip on coming out through Grand Junction. Came that way as a young kid with parents to visit Colorado from Calif and I do remember it being very scenic - 80 is faster but monotonous drive.

Wes,

Had my tires balanced and rotated and front end aligned today and was mentioning my situation while I was taking care of business and the sales person said I should just rent a truck or SUV for all the hoops I have to go through trying to find wheels to fit my Subaru. I never even thought of that!! I'm going to go on line and check prices. Probably could get one for a whole week for 1/2 of what it would cost to get wheels and tires and then I would have to figure out where to put the darn things when I got home, not to mention trying to explain to the wife just exactly what's going on. See you in June if your able to make it.

Pat

For small punctures a plug kit and 12 volt compressor works good. I always try to plug the tire if possible and save the spare as a last resort.
