Nugget Hunting at it's Best!

Recommended Posts

Let’s see, where shall I start. After selling my 4500 I vowed never to set fourth in the foothills of CA. again. Because no matter what I did I would get poison oak, so I sold my 4500.

Then I received emails from LuckyLundy explaining his ritual of how he avoids the ivy for he used to get it in the military real bad.

Well a few months go bye and I got the bug again to detect, Minelab sent out a memo to their dealers and the 4000 was on sale for a limited time under $3K, so I bought one.

Off to the foothills again and LuckyLundy’s suggestions worked great. I would get a small rash from time to time but it would not spread, I can live with that.

Only finding trash and lead in my area. Lucky, invited me to join him for the day on the farm in hopes of helping me get that imbedded skunk off my back. We met at a mutual place not to far from the farm and Lucky gave me a tour and a lesson on the geology in that area.

Lucky put me in a patch that produced many nuggets in the past while he ventured close guiding me. Seems like every 30 minutes Lucky would yell to me “I GOT ONEâ€, do you have any yet? And I would bow my head down and say NO, but I got some trash.

Another 30 minutes and Lucky would yell “I GOT ANOTHERâ€, do you have any yet?

And I would answer no. This kept up till Lucky had 5 nuggets.

We sat down for some grub and talked about prospecting, family and whatever else came to mind. After lunch he grabbed his pick and took me to his new patch. I would swing the coil and Lucky would dig. Once the target was in the scoop we would both be kneeled down with anticipation of pulling out a nugget and for the first 4 digs we got trash.

The fifth target was the skunk buster. We where both kneeled down, the hole was about 9†deep and Lucky pulls out another scoop and I see something yellow. He grabbed it and handed it to me, my eye’s where popping, WOW! What a nugget you found and handed it to me. I said “It’s your patch, I can’t keep this and handed it backâ€, he looked at me and said, “No, you keep it, make a pendant or something, you deserve it†and handed it back to me. I said “Are you sure, this is an awesome nugget†and he said “Take it!â€

It turns out this nugget weighs 18.4 DWT and it looks like the lady on the mud flaps some truckers have. So Lucky named her the “Lady Nuggetâ€. For the next few day’s I just did not feel right accepting this nugget since it was Lucky’s patch so to make me feel better, I purchased a few accessories for his detector.

Lucky’s scale say’s 18.4DWT and my scale says 1 oz. I like my scale better since it is weighs an ounce, not a TROY ounce, but an ounce. Lol , Can I say I made it to the 1oz club?

Anyways, I just want to say that you don’t meet many people like LuckyLundy who goes that extra mile to help people out, so they too can enjoy a hobby that he has enjoyed for so many years. This is a nugget that most dream of but finding they never do and Lucky had no issues of letting me keep my dream!

HOW AWESOME IS THAT!

Tony,

Now I don't think, you would haven't taken that "Lady Nugget" for yourself, if circumstances where turned around and you saw the face, I seen. Every Father has seen a face full of happiness from his children...you had that face, and I was not about to take it away from you! Your "Lady Nugget" will always be a part of my memories. I've had the fortune of finding countless nuggets in my years of dredging, dry washing, panning and sluicing etc. And have shared my knowledge with a train load of great friends. Now that I'm armed with a quality metal detector, it's not much different...still find gold, still share the history, excitement and the comradeship with a new friend. After all when it's said and done, it's not all the gold you find, but the friends you make along the way! Wish more could understand, what me and my friends believe in. Tony, you stick close to O'l Sinsay...you'll fill your poke with gold and happiness!

Here's another picture of our big day at the ranch, see ya soon, Tony.

It does sort of look like the Mud Flap girl :)

Very nice gold.

Hey Lucky, Care to take a Consistantly Skunked newbie into the field with you? :D

J/k...I will get mine someday...My VLF Minelab seems to require a bit more patience and perserverence, 200+ detecting hours has netted me over 1000 pieces of led, rusty barbed wire, shell casings, and any other piece of metal trash you can think of. It seems I am destined to get my gold through panning/dredging/sluicing and finding pieces with my naked eye while busting up fractured bedrock. ;)

I think I am Married to the skunk :D:spank: Constantly getting spanked :D

Anyways, all joking aside...that is some Gorgeous gold.

I've often heard it said, "Gold brings out the worst in people." Well the fact is, "Gold also brings out the best in people." I think that may be sort of a mistatement because I think gold just tells you the the kind of person you are dealing with. Obviously Lucky is one of the good guys! Congratualtions to you both.

Nathan,

You keep swinging that VLF, I found gold with all my VLF's. Try not to hang around Minelab guy's in the field...they all ways found more gold than me...I had to change my tools to play with the big boyz! Good luck.

Doc,

Thanks for the kind words. It's a great hobby if you keep the right folks around you!

Hi Tony, that is a great story and an awesome nugget. Lucky Lundy is a great example of the kind of people that are involved in this hobby. You always hear about the negative stuff, but most of us have had at least one person who unselfishly helped us over the big hump(the first one) and into the world of successful nuggethunting. Congrats to both of you. Later...Jim P.

My VLF is a Minelab (Eureka Gold). Does that mean I am a Big Boy? hehehe lol j/k

I am sure I will find gold with my Eureka eventually. I just have to get the coil over a piece...I KNOW my machine and can guess the length of the barbed wire usually with in a quarter inch or so. lol...I've dug enough pieces so far..:)

Thanks for the encouragement, I am not losing my motivation, just a little depressed that I've dug SO much trash and no gold. :(

:D

Nathan.
