oneziggycat
Hey everyone,I had been to Portwine before ,but not to prospect. My father and I took a drive through there this fall. We headed south west down the ridge to another ghost town called poverty hill. The mine was mostly small Quartz wash, and there was alot to look at. So I didn't spend much time detecting. I'm thinking of heading back this year and wondering if any one is familiar with the area, or has any advice. I'm also interested in sniping lower Slate Creek it looks steep and remote. thanks. Reno Chris
There is gold there, but also a lot of claims - be sure to check and see that you are not trespassing. Chris
oneziggycat
Chris, The only private property and claims I saw was at Grass flat and howland flat further up the ridge towards gibsonville. Are you familiar with the area I read it was some of the richest hydraulicking ground in the state. Aaron
Reno Chris
The only private property and claims I saw was at Grass flat and howland flat further up the ridge towards gibsonville.Exactly my point. Just because you do not "see" evidence of a claim does not mean there is not a valid claim there. Especially in brushy country like that, claim monuments dont often stick out. I promise you that there are loads and loads of valid claims up there even if you did not see them. Thats why its necessary to do research to find out what is claimed and what is not. Yes, I am familiar with the area. Its true that the upper part of that area - La Porte / St. Louis / Howland Flat was among the richest hydraulic ground in California. The same was not necessarily true of Port Wine / Poverty Hill / Scales.
oneziggycat
Chris, Yeah thats a real good point, Thanks for the info. I will have to do some more claim research before going back down there.

AaronAaron there's acess to the lower end of slate creek where it dumps into the N fork of the yuba. the road to race track point near strawberry valley will get you in there. I think this a recreation area now the last time I was in there It was tuff going and a lot of creek crossing. No trails But nice Gold.

I've been working in the middle fork for the last three seasons so it should be a nice change of pace and alot of new cracks to look at.Thanks again and you didn't happen to leave any dive wieghts down ha ha.Aaron
