Azoverland
I'm looking at picking up a Coiltek 18x12 mono - the serial # is 5041. That is before the problems they had. When I turn it around the thing sounds like an hour glass. There is sand in the coil I guess but the guy says he taped it up before he ever used it. It does look like it is amost new. The Commander coil looked worst after my first day out. Anyone got any tips on these? Does Coiltek really have alot of knock off out there and would you be worried about the sound in the coil? Last question, if MineLab makes the best detectors why don't they make the best coils too???
adam
Could it be the carbon paint that has has crumbled and separated from the foam? If so I wouldnt buy it ...It can be fixed however.. The skid plate needs to be removed to see if debris is under the plate or inside the coil itself.

This would allow for sand to get inbetween the coil cover and the coil. If for some mysterious reason the coil has sand inside I would be woried. Border Boy
minelab does make some pretty darn good coils, they just dont have a huge selection. that commander you have is a great coil, just a little heavy. Dont let these coils keep ya up ( Ive tried them all) , they are all good coils and will find the gold if you walk over a piece. A person realy only needs a few coils a tiny mono , a med mono ( you already have) , a large mono, and a nice all around DD (already have). If you get into a good area that has special needs then a new coil suited to the area and gold would be justified. Just my wo cents bro..........................Justin
ARGONAUTE
I haven't taken a skid plate off a 18X12 mono, but it could just be sand that has worked it way inside from the inner seams (if they are untaped as said before). You could try to remove the skid plate. BTW A new skid plate may therefore help the coil look like new....Then again there are counterfit/fakes ones on the market and these could be manufactured in ChinaDongguan Cheebo Electronic Co., Ltdhttp://www.aliexpress.com/wholesale/wholesale-18x12-mono-coiltek.htmlMinelab counterfeit info - Dongguan areahttp://www.minelab.com/emea/consumer/where-to-buy/buyer-bewareI'm not saying that the one you're looking at is one, but be absolutely careful!
