kamikaze
Planning on joining my nugget hunting buddy for a AMDA coin shoot later this year. I have my md for the shoot but my Wife seems to be interested in trying it out too. It will be her first experience metal detecing so don't want her to struggle too much but don't want to buy a coin detector special for that occassion just in case she doesn't catch the bug. The only other spare detector I have is a GM3...would that be a terrible idea for her to use that for a planted coin shoot? It will be my first coin shoot too but I am told that the coins will practically be on the surface...
dutch john
kamikazi...I'm a member of the AMDA... Is the hunt going to be at Primm? The GM3 will sorta work depending upon the local trash in the areawhere the huntfield is... You can demonstrate this to the wife by setting up the GM3 as if hunting and put armcuff on the ground withthe coil in the air... now pass a non-ferrous coin-size target across the coil with an air space of several inches... notice the non-ferrous coin appears to sound off when it is over the leading edge of the search coil and stops when it passes the trailing edge. Thus the Zip sound that Larry Sallee mentions in his book "Zip, Zip."Now do this with a ferrous iron coin sized target... it should start to sound off before the leading edge and stop after it has passed the trailing edge... The zip sound will be more of a "zziiip. and maybe the iron indicator will be helpful...It may be better to use little v/sat and keep the sensitivity low. Circular flat coins will give a good target... As you know goldspecifc detectors such as the GM3 are capable of finding goodstuff in the dry ocean beaches... Please... anyone... everyone... reading this thread feel free to postyour thoughts... this is how we learn... especially me...
kamikaze
thanks for the input dutch john! Planning on the Laughlin hunt in Oct. It seems that the general consensus is that the GM3 would be a bad starter md for my Wife. Anyone want to trade! (metal detectors, not Wives)
dutch john
Kamikazi... I understand the next AMDA hunt will be at Primm... the sametime as the GPAA gold show... As far as detectors... there will be many different models used, from the latest to "oldies but goodies."
