srferjo714
While out working old placers in Yucca Valley. This place had volcanic and white and rose quartz rock. The river bank was about 7 tall form the bed rock 2’ of it had just been cut away from the rain. I was working along the bottom and got a faint tone so started digging. This thing was down about 8†deep and About 6' into the bank. I thought it was trash until I saw it. There are very very fine flakes of gold on the bottom. It is not soft like lead or silver. I tried to file one corner but the stuff is hard. It is also non magnetic. This was not the only one but it is the biggest.

AZNuggetBob
Hi srferjo714 My best guess is mill or volcanic slag. mill slag is leftovers from refining metals. may contain small amounts of the original metals that were furnaced off in the flux. srferjo714
Hey Bob,You might be right, could be why I see gold flake in it. I did not see a mill site but with 7" of overburden you never know. I am going to run the drywasher this summer on that spot.
AZNuggetBob
If you have several and dont mind crushing one go ahead and pan it if there are tiny round beads of metal its definitely mill slag. but if they did a good job of furnacing the colors your seeing may only be flashed on the surface and contain only trace amounts of metal and wont show up in the pan.
