  4. Hello All,

Hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and an upcoming New Year - 2023.  It's been hard to break out prior to Christmas, but managed to sneak out the day after for a hunt.  I spent the entire day with the Minelab GPZ 7000 and the NF 12" Round Searchcoil and ended up with a nice handful of gold (small patch or pocket found).  Not shown are the 100+ trash targets ranging from boot tacks, wire, can fragments, bullet casing, lead bullets and more.

Glory to the Great Lord for allowing me to finish the season with a nice pocket of gold and hopes of a great 2023 prospecting/metal detecting season.

71.70 Dwts of nuggets or 3.58 Troy ounces of gold.

  5. Hey Guys,

Due to my limited time, I haven't had much time on the new Garrett Axiom metal detector.  However, my first impression on the unit were pretty good.

First, the new Garrett sells for MAP of $3995 or 15% discount for USA Active/Retired Vets.  I believe Garrett marketed this unit to fit perfectly into the budget of most gold prospectors and treasure hunters.  They also give you the option of two packages, one with wireless headphones and a 11" Mono and 13" DD, or wired headphones and a 11 DD and 13" Mono.  Many of my customers have been split on the packages, the ones that want more depth out of the box seem to take the larger Mono packages, while the ones that are looking for max sensitivity to small targets and nuggets go with the 11" Mono.

Secondly, overall the unit is very light, lighter than any other gold hunting Pulse Induction metal detector including Minelab's GPX 6000.  I also believe Garrett built a bit better design, haven't seen issues with a shaft turning or wobbling as of yet, seems like a stronger design from other similar manufactures.

Finally, on the Goldfields, the unit was very stable overall.  I used the 11" Mono the entire time the first trip out as I wanted to just get used to the performance of the unit before dabbling too much with the DD and Iron ID.  That being said, Garrett does offer the Iron ID on this unit, where most other PI's have done away with any type of iron discrimination (GPX 5000 and prior).  Many believe there is still a need or use for Iron ID in trashy locations, which I do tend to agree.

The unit was simple to understand without even reading the Quick Start Manual.  I charged the Axiom the night prior, let it charge overnight and removed in the morning prior to the hunt.  I powered on the Axiom, adjusted the sensitivity, placed in Normal mode, Tone around 55, adjusted my threshold, used in Medium Tracking then did the EMI tune and started hunting.  The unit ran really smooth and stable, the only time it was a bit unstable, which happens with most detectors is when a airplane flew over.  This would last a minute or two, then calm down.

Believe it or not, my first target in a very trashy area was a nice nugget (pictures will come).  I couldn't believe it, had to yell over to a friend and say, "Dude do you believe this?"  That being said, I spent the next hour or so digging through a bunch  of trash and didn't find another piece until later.  I only had a few small hotrocks respond, which could easily be ID's when seen.

I ended the trip with 4 nuggets, two pretty nice ones and two smaller ones.  I also had a nice pouch full of iron rubbish, as I was not using the DD or Iron ID on the Axiom at the time.  This will be something else I need to experiment with, as I heard the Axiom does very well with the Iron ID mode.

I was hoping for a bit more sensitivity to small targets, as I was running the "sensitivity" almost all the way, but realized later I wasn't in "Fine" mode, which I believe will increase the overall sensitivity to small gold even more than the "Normal' mode.

Quick Conclusion - Garrett did a great job on this unit, it's priced right, performs well, very lightweight and will have other searchcoil options available.  The unit is super easy to use, almost a turn on and Go detector.  I know there are a ton of people going to ask, is it better than the GPX 6000, I'm not going to say that, but I think with the price, performance and a USA made detector, Garrett hit a "Home Run" here.

P.S.  I don't claim to be an expert on this detector, I have had very limited time on it, but do have over 30 years detecting experience now, so I felt I could give a fair, quick field test on this new Garrett Axiom.

May all your targets be Golden!

  10. Hey Fishing,

What timing setting are you using?  For small gold, I found that "Sensitive/Extra" did best for me.  You should be able to find nuggets down to at least 3-5 grains on bedrock with that combo. Also keep in mind, the Minelab PI's (even the GPX series) prior to the 6000 don't do super well on crystalline nuggets, but if you had a solid or flat piece the same weight it would scream.

  11. Thanks for the comments guys.  Brown Nugget your story reminds me of our recent trip to San Diego.  We left here, Central Arizona and it was 118 degrees that day at our house.  We drove through Yuma, temps were about the same.  We crossed into Cali, temps still about the same until we hit the farming areas of El Centro and it dropped a few degrees.  Then eventually before we climbed over that Mountain range around Alpine, the temps were down in the 80-90's, then mid 70's around San Diego.  It was about a 5 hour drive and almost 40 degree temp drop.

Too bad  there wasn't much gold right in San Diego :D

  12. Hey Guys,

Well I'm not sure if it's just un-motivation, heat, humidity or what, but it's been a slow summer prospecting for me to say the least.  Prior to the summer, up to about May-June a partner and myself were still out hitting the goldfields religiously.   I put down the GPZ 7000 for a bit and wanted to give the Minelab GPX 6000 some time, so that is just want I did prior to Summer rolling in.  In just a month or so on the weekends I rounded up a nice little batch of nuggets, roughly 1.66 ounces, mostly smaller gold.  I was getting really adjusted to the lightweight unit and its ability to find small gold really well.

Well, now its summer, heat up to 110-115 plus high humidity, my interested drastically dropped.  I have been out a few early mornings before the Sun popped up hitting some new spots in hots for a new location or patch.  I found 3 lonely nuggets in 3 new locations, really thought one of them would pan out into a good spot.  I couldn't tell you how many lonely nuggets I have found over the years in new washes, benches or hillsides where I spent the rest of the day thinking I was onto something.  Many of the spots over the years I have returned thinking I must have missed something or just overlooked the obvious ... NOPE just not there (or within detector capability to find).

I'm excited for the cool weather to roll upon us soon.  There's a lot of new stuff to play with, including the new Garrett Axiom metal detector, Coiltek GoldHawk coils for the GPX 6000, Nugget Finder coils for GPX 6000 (coming soon), along with the Nugget Finder 17" Elliptical for the GPZ 7000.  We carry all of these items for anyone that might be looking at some point, look us up if you don't have a source already.

Here are a few pictures of some of the gold I rounded up, nothing to write home about, but it still gets the "Gold Bug" biting.

    Keep the coils swinging,

    Rob

  13. Hey Bob,

I have been out swinging for the Monsoon Gold a little bit, been picking up some bits here and there, nothing to write home about.  The Monsoon's in some areas can blow out washes and exposing new bedrock sections that could contain gold nuggets.  A tip for anyone new, if you found nuggets in a wash, always re-visit after large Monsoon storms or Winter storms, you might be quite surprised!

Yes, the GPZ 7000 is a beast when it comes to weight, but it's also the KING for depth if your ground warrants it.  I wouldn't recommend a GPZ 7000 for someone that is hunting nothing but shallow or bedrock conditions, but anywhere the ground is 1-3 foot in depth and nuggets have been found, it's worth it.  The lightest coil that does not require any modifications to the cable and such would be the Nugget Finder 12" Z Searchoil.  This is my go to coil on my GPZ, still get good depth, but lighter and a bit more sensitive than the stock 14x13 Super DD.

The Garrett Axiom will have it's place for sure.  It's great to see Garrett jump in with a great new detector.  It's not going to take on a GPZ 7000 @ $8499, nor be a GPX 6000 slayer at @ $6000, but at $3995 it will have it's place and do well.  It's has a lot of great features, Iron Scan, Lightweight 4.7 lbs, Wireless Headphones, extreme battery life 16 hours & several audio types.

Going to be interesting this Winter season with new coils for the GPZ 7000, new coils for the GPX 6000 and the new Garrett Axiom metal detector.

  14. Hey Steve,

Doc's Essential Shaft Kit was designed for the user to have the ability to at least adjust the length.  I  don't think Doc or anyone has claimed it's lighter, just the fact the upper is Carbon Fiber and the Lowers are Fiberglass.  The lowers are the same shafts that Doc's designs for the SD/GP or GPX series.

The only other option is the Detect Ed shafts, which are designed for the Minelab Equinox series, but do fit on the GM 1000.  I'm trying to get more in, but they are very hard to get right now.  They are a bit pricey at $129 - 169 range depending on the color and style.

Minelab states their lower shaft is "Collapsible," but it IS NOT.  It's really a 3 piece shaft that you have to unscrew, so Doc's Essential Rod Kit that we sell is the next best option.

    Hope this helps a bit,

    Rob

  15. Hey Guys,

For the GPZ 7000, the only coils that are available are the Minelab ones (14x13 Super DD, stock coil) & (19" Super DD).  Nugget Finder makes the awesome 12" Round Z Searchcoil, which I absolutely love, but are in the process of releasing a 17" Elliptical real soon.  I'm very excited for this coil, as I wanted something a bit bigger, but the 19" is just too much.

X-Coils from Russia are also making a bunch of aftermarket coils for the GPZ, but you have to make a "patch cord," which requires the cable from an existing GPZ searchcoil.

There are tons of coils available for the SD/GP & GPX series from Minelab, Coiltek, Nugget Finder, Detech & X-coils.

As for the new GPX 6000, you have the three Minelab coils available, 11" Round Mono, 14" Round DD or the 17" Elliptical Mono.  Coiltek just released 3 coils, 10x5 Elliptical, 9" Round & 14x9 Elliptical.  Nugget Finder will have a few coils also available hopefully by mid September 2022.

    Hope this helps a bit,

    Rob

  16. Hey Guys,

Sorry I have been a bit slow on this, but I just updated my online store to show the new Garrett Axiom now available for pre-order/pre-pay for anyone wanting some of the first units available.  There is a huge demand for this unit, so I recommend anyone seriously interested to order online below or contact us ASAP.  We are also offer the 15% Military discount on this unit, but I does require a DD214 or Military ID from the person making the purchase.

    https://www.robsdetectors.com/garrett-axiom-metal-detector-with-13-dd-11-mono-searchcoils-ms-3-headphones/

I should also have the accessory coils and other stuff that will be available online very soon.
