newriverblake
I have this specimen and I don't like the darker rock. On another thread I read some of you had tried pool acid and Wink. I haven't had any luck with pool acid. What's your opinion for this rock? I have used Wink before but not for more than a day. Think it will dissolve rock if left in for a long period of time? TIA
Admin nuggethunting Posted September 1, 2013 Admin Report Share Posted September 1, 2013 Hey Blake, The dark rock looks like iron, or at least an iron mineral. Wink normally does work on iron and quartz, but since Wink is really a very low concentration of HF acid, you might have to leave it in for days, maybe a week. It works slowly and sometimes you might need to stir and even re-apply new Wink every day or so. As the acid eats away, it becomes less effective, or at least this is my personal experience. Also, even though Wink is not really strong, I recommend all the PPE (eye glasses, rubber gloves, eye wash and such). Take another shot once you clean it up a bit. Looks like it's going to be a beauty!
NvDoug
Hey Blake,I agree. . . that is a nice piece. I have never found gold with that much iron mineral on it, all of mine had just an iron stain on the rock to which the pool acid and wink worked fast. I have also been told to change out the solution of wink after a bit of soaking. Can't wait to see it cleaned up.Good luck
newriverblake
Thanks guys,I will give it a try and post when I think it's done. Hopefully it doesn't turn into a bunch of tiny pieces.
nuggetnut329
That said I'd leave it in its natural state, I really like the looks of it. Just my option it took millions of yrs to get that look. Rick
nvchris
Don't use glass, Wink will eat it away.Plastic works fine.
frank c
Sweet piece Blake. Wink will work just have to have patience and like all said may have to re add to the mix to keep the strength up, let it sit for days an keep checking on its progress. Is that a southern Az piece ..?
newriverblake
FrankIt's a piece that I found four or five months ago north of phx a little ways, I keep going back and forth on if I want to soak it in winks because, on a continuity test not all parts of the exposéd gold will pass current through. It weighs 9.4 grams and the specific gravity test was 6.7 grams of gold.
DesertNuggets
It is a beauty. I'm not normally for soaking but I think I would if it were mine.
Admin nuggethunting Posted September 5, 2013 Admin Report Share Posted September 5, 2013 Hey NewRiverBlake, Did you happen to place the piece in Wink? Just curious on the status of the piece .....
newriverblake
Rob It's been in for about 48 hours now and it doesn't look like anything has happened yet.
newriverblake
After about a week - this is what it turned out like! I stopped the process because a lot of small gold was starting to fall off the speciman. I replaced the Wink once. I am happy with how it turned out although it is more fragile now. Thanks for all your input!

DOC
You should now soak it in baking soda and water for about a week to stop the HF from eating away anymore at the iron. That piece looks like the gold is being held together via iron and quartz. If you put it in baking soda solution and see bubbles form on the surface, that will tell you the acid is being neutralized.Doc
