DOC
Several years back when I had first gotten my ATV, I was really off the beaten path, looking for gold. I found some too. Also found an old mining camp, totally untouched, claim signs still in place. No one had probably been there in forever. As I was trying to find my way back out I ran across this cool canteen, just laying on the ground. It says Bear Brand on the lid, stamped into the body is Patented 1918. I found it as I was cleaning out my storage container. It occurred to me that in 2 years that canteen will be 1 century old. A real piece of old history. I wish that canteen could talk. fredm
nice find, Doc! I am always looking while I travel or detect and find some nice goodies doing so. Did you ever try the chili recipe out? fred
LipCa
Those zinc coated, canvas covered canteens were pretty common in the 50's and 60's. I packed a number of them climbing the hills. That one could be a bit older? Any think else on it to date it? I noticed Bear still makes canteens... plastic, of course. Nice find anyway...... if it could only talk. DOC
Fred, Yes we did make the chili, it was a big hit. Nice to have a good recipe that is different from red chili. Thank you again! Doc
Dakota Slim
I pity the poor son-of-a-gun who ran out of water way out there. His bones can't be too far from the canteen.
Tortuga
I'll bet it's pretty hard to find one with the cap on it and not all rusted out or smashed up. I've found a few old canteens out in the desert but none of them were in very good condition. Nice find.
