  1. Hey Steve, Great find and thanks for sharing. I think the most important thing about hunting for gold is being in the right spots and being first on the ground with a detector. When someone in the knows (like Reno Chris) can point out or show someone a location, it could be a good one. Hope you guys can score some more from that same ground. P.S. Looking forward to seeing you both soon. Rob Allison
  2. Hey Chris, You don't have to spend much if you want to crush small amounts of ore for sampling purposes. Something very simple, a 1/4 plate of iron and a small sledge hammer (single jack) will do the job. The biggest part is trying to keep the pieces from flying all over the place, so having edges helps. If you can have someone make you a tube about 3-4 inches in diameter welded to a plate below, then you can have someone make a masher. You can load pieces of ore in the tube, stand up and then use a rod with a heavy flat weight on the bottom about an inch smaller than the tube and crush the crap out of ore. I had several of these build for very little to nothing if you know someone that welds. Once you crush the ore down to a powder, then turn over the tube and plate, wack with a hammer ane all your ore that is down to a dust can be panned out.
  3. Hey Chris, I have them on order, just waiting for them to arrive. I might get one a bit earlier if I'm lucky. Either way it will be interesting to test out.
  4. Hey Guys, Have to agree due to the sales on this new unit. It's selling very well, thought it might be a tough sale with the Swing Thingy and Ultra Swingy Thingy out there.
  5. Hey Chris, Looks like the typical gold or silver ore in the Southwest. It's hard to tell by looking unless you see VG (visible gold). You can by a cheap dolly pot (mortar and pedestal) and crush some of the better stuff up. Normally the more rotten, vuggy iron stained ore can be the best. Hope this helps, Rob Allison
  6. Hey Steve, Yes, we will be at the Training and Conference. Looking forward to seeing you there. Be interesting to see how the new Garrett ATX works out. Like you said, it could be the perfect fit for the in-between PI detector. Rob Allison
  7. Hey Russ, To the LORD your God belong the heavens, even the highest heavens, the earth and everything in it. - Deuteronomy 10:14

  10. Hey Old Tom, Pieces that small are almost too small for a GPX 5000 and small coil to detect. These type of nuggets are perfect for the Goldbug series (Pro and GB2). The more surface area a searchcoil can hit on, the better the target. A nugget on edge is much harder to hear due to the smaller surface area than a nugget on the side (more surface area). I know exactly what you mean by "chasing a hot rock." I've pushed small nuggets like this around on bedrock, you almost need tweezers to recover them. When they are small, you have to be careful not to push them into a hole or down into a deeper crack. Hope this helps a bit, Rob Allison
  11. Hey Bunk, Great hit with the Fisher Goldbug Pro metal detector. It's a pretty sweet detector for the price and really lightweight. I've found some dinks with mine playing around on the bedrock. Wishing you many more! Rob Allison
  12. Hey Dan, Thanks for the update on Jim Straight. I have two mentors when it comes to getting to where Im now as for hunting for gold. Jim Straight's books were such an inspiration and a wealth of knowledge when there was no internet to research. Later, once Jim and I became friends, we shared hundreds if not thousands of emails back in forth over the years along with many hand written letters. Without Jim's help on Geology and such, I wouldn't have continued. Richard Doherty of Rock Springs was my others. Richard was more of my metal detecting mentor, as he helped me get over the humps and become a success nugget shooter. Richard agreed, there were and are no books like Jim's! Great to hear Jim is doing much better. Without a doubt, Jim is a fighter and will continue to get better. I'm sure he will have the detector back in the field snooping around in no time.
  13. Hey Tom, Great find for your Dad. Did he finding metal detecting or using another method? Thanks for sharing, Rob Allison
  14. Hey Guys, Great looking nuggets with holes in them. I know it might sound silly, but the nuggets with holes are much more scarce than the typical solid, slug nuggets. Hope to see others share their "nuggets with holes" with us. I know I have some others, just have to dig up the old pictures of them. Thanks for sharing, Rob Allison
  15. Hey Doc, That is like my Father, he don't get the searching for gold much. Over all the years, finding thousands of nuggets, he just never got it. Now if I was doing something related to Football, that might be a different story. I guess when I was younger I leaned more towards Science and Technology over Sports .... LOL Rob Allison
  16. Hello All, I've always liked finding the gold nuggets with holes in them, even though it's a very small percentage of most of the nuggets being found. Here is one I found in Central Arizona years ago that weight around 3/4 ounce. It has some decent character besides the larger and smaller holes. I believe I found this one back when the GP series was around. Post your nugget(s) with holes if you have them. Take care, Rob Allison
  17. Hey Guys, I actually changed the solution twice during those couple of days. I wasn't real impressed with the results, but then again the WINK is only a micro concentration of HF.
  18. Hello All, Here are two nuggets that I soaked in WINK for a few days. I wasn't impressed with WINK anymore, seems much more diluted than years ago. I might of had better success using Pool Acid, but at least you can see some changes from the two pictures. Take care, Rob Allison
  19. Hey Guys, Great nuggets for the first ones. My first one was a 7.5 Dwt nugget on an ancient bench along a major gold bearing creek in Arizona. I was using a Minelab VLF with a 6-inch round DD. The nugget was pretty much on the surface. I have posted it before, but I will dig through the pictures and repost.
  20. Thanks for posting that Doc!! God Bless America.
  21. Damn Jim, I was a porker in that picture!! I can't remember if that was a customer of mine or one of the other guys friend.
  22. Hey NV AU Miner, Most don't realize I spent years working dumps here in Arizona when I first started detecting with a VLF. I was using a Tesoro Lobo at first, but then switched to the Goldbug 2 when it was released. I'm still finding small quartz pieces with just traces of gold that I found with a GB2 and tossed the pieces in boxes that I'm now consolidating. My favorite coil was the 6.5 inch elliptical DD like other guys stated. It will give you the best overall sensitivity to small gold and specimens. Congrats on the recent finds and glad I was able to help a bit. Rob Allison
  23. Hey Glenn, The spot where you blew the tire has always interested me. It's difficult to get back in there without hiking now. Ya, that old guy from Parker that owned those claims at Quartzsite had some good property. I'm not sure what's going on back there now.
  24. Hello All, Here is an email I received a few days ago. Jack was involved with the Roadrunner Prospectors Club if anyone of you are members. God Bless Jack, family and friends.
  25. Hey Guys, Brandon - I have more pictures, I will send them over. I will have to go through hundreds of pictures to find them. Tom H - You're welcome. It was great to see you get a Minelab PI and find the pieces you have so far here in Arizona. We need to get out on another hunt when it cools off a bit. Glenn - You heading back out this Winter Season? Speaking of Richard, I spent many years with him. Without a doubt he is my detector mentor, without his help I wouldn't be detecting. I still remember when I walked over a 1/4 ounce nugget and my footprint was right on the spot. He asked me if I had my gun on me? I wasn't sure where he was going, but then he dropped the piece in my hand and told me I stepped right on it. I about shit, but sure enough, I was doing more walking with my detector on my shoulder then coil on the ground. This was a hard lesson learned, but it taught me to not give up so early. I have no many memories of Richard and all you guys. Glenn and I spent a lot of time tromping the hills from down South to the tip of the Northern Bradshaw's. Take care, Rob Allison
