  1. Hey Steve, I agree, the SDC 2300 is a real winner. I was a bit skeptical at first and agree the price is keeping it out of many hands. I've had handfuls of customers wanting to wheel and deal, bargain and trade for the SDC. If I wanted to take gold in trade, I would probably have 3-4 pounds by now. I might have to consider the gold nugget market - buying/selling soon. Looking forward to hunting with all you guys in the near future.
  2. Hey Dave, Any chance someone can give me a more detailed idea on where you can park and start a search by foot? I have no problem walking, just kind of need a better idea on where to search. I know guys say the RR tracks. I never have been to Holbrook, so have no idea of the layout and where someone can park and start to hunt. Any updated info would be appreciated. Thanks for all the prior help and suggestions.

  5. Hello All, Lately I haven't been able to swing the detector much due to the work load and business. At the last minute Saturday afternoon I told myself I couldn't sit around anymore, needed to get out for a short hunt. I loaded up the GPX 5000 and gear and headed to a spot to see what the recent Monsoon storms have done. The particular spot was great many years ago and always a good producer after a good storm system. I guess it's getting to point the easy gold is gone and the storm not doing enough to move the overburden in the right spots. I did manage to dig a handful of iron rubbish, a few lead bullets and one Gram sized gold nugget shown below in a bedrock crack. Sometimes the exercise and the fact you're away from the stressful city life is worth the weight in gold. Hope you enjoyed. Rob Allison
  6. Hey Chris, Happy Belated Birthday. Been away from the forums for a few days. Wishing you much success!!
  7. Hey Steve, Great post as always. Congrats on the recent success with the SDC 2300. I'm with you Steve, I'm going to use the SDC for a lot of prospecting this winter season. Once I locate a spot or patch, I will come back at some point and give the GPX 5000 a shot at it. I have a nice mid-sized Camelpack, hydration backpack that the SDC 2300 fits in. I can carry a good 100 ounces of water, the SDC 2300, other misc. gear and food all in one pack. Hike in, set up and metal detect for gold. At the end of the day, break down, pack up and hike out! P.S. Talked with Glenn a few days ago. We should get a hunt organized this winter with all of us. Maybe in a new areas and we can all prospect and explore in hopes of a new discovery.
  8. Hey Guys, Thanks for the info. I was hoping to maybe bump into someone in the area that might be willing to share some time with me in exchange for some gold hunting info. I would love to find just a small piece to have for my collection, but I will have a great time just walking around searching. I have hear some have used a good VLF up there, while others say it's best to use a magnetic cane/stick. Any other info would be much appreciated. Rob Allison
  9. Hey Barry & Leigh, Great looking flow-chart and also Thanks for the heads-up!! Thanks for all you do for this hobby of prospecting for gold and the research involved. Glad to know two great people like yourselves. Rob Allison
  10. Hey Relichunter, Great museum quality piece of gold you found there. Ya, that sucks when someone misses a nice piece, but we all do. I walked over some nice pieces over the years and someone dug them. No doubt I was frustrated, but it's made me become more aware of what I could be walking away from.
  11. Hello All, I might be up in the Holbrook, Arizona area for a few days in the near future and wanted to know if anyone could share information on the strewnfield. I would to have a chance to find one of the small, Holbrook Meteorites, so any help on where to search and what method (magnetic cane vs. VLF metal detector) is best would be appreciated. Thanks!
  12. Hey Buckeye Boy, Congrats on the CA finds. Always nice to get away from the heat.
  13. Hey MS, Here is one old picture I found that is mostly ironstone/gold with some quartz. This piece was 1.2 ounces and laying right on the surface below a rotten quartz/iron vein. Never found anymore there, but been wanting to recheck the area, but it's a good 4-5 mile hike.
  14. Hey ManzanitaSlayer, Agreed, the gold really stands out against the iron. I'm not sure I would say they are more rare, just depends on where someone might be detecting. Some locations might contain nothing but that type of gold, while others places might be solid nuggets with no host, while others might have some host. You don't seem them as often, but not sure if that brings a premium on the price. Either way, you found some really nice looking pieces.
  15. Hello All, Curious if anyone over in OZ has used one of these yet? I know Woody mentioned they are not for sale to any dealer at the moment, just a direct sale. Check out the Youtube video below -
  16. Hey MS, I seen that Tom mentioned acid and some like to use it. However, keep the original look, the iron makes the specimens stand out. If you eat away the iron, then the piece is not natural anymore. Just my opinion.
  17. Hello ManzanitaSlayer, Yes, Gold, Iron and Quartz are some of my favorite pieces. I have found many over the years up to about 1.5 ounces, majority being a few Dwt's in weight. Great looking specimens you found. They probably didn't travel very far from the original vein if its still there.
  18. Hey Guys, I have always recommended keeping the li-ions charged fully. If you're not using them, charge them monthly if possible if they are going to sit for long periods of time without use. I can't tell you how many have purchased replacment li-ions cause of this, 99% of them admitted they didn't charge them, left them sitting for long periods of time dead. When I'm going to weekly, I will just let them sit on the chargers and never had issues. I have used this method for over 10 years with the small, li-ion batteries for the Pocket Rocket or Goldscreamer Power Pack.
  19. Hey Doc, A lot of fakes out there, some don't even know it and think it's a real 5000 and performing like the others. Several years ago during the GPX 4500 boom, a customer of mine decided they were not going to buy anymore GPX 4500's from me, as they found another person that was selling them for 1/2 the price. I tried to convince this person they were fakes, but they pulled the plug and purchased 20 of them. I received a phone call months later and this person was crying on the phone asking for help. They wanted me to help them sell or do what I could as they were out over $45,000 on fakes. They said it took their entire savings, checking and a good portion of their 401K. I told them many times not to purchase, but they were convinced they could purchased real ones for 1/2 the price, even when I told them I couldn't buy them from Minelab at that price. Some people don't learn, or learn the hard way.

  22. Hey Tom, Good looking ironstone patch. Always worth a quick search through those areas just in case.
  23. Hey Guys, I agree, Glenn kicked butt several years in a row. He "runned and gunned" the piles trying to get the better signals quickly and it worked well. I think several years in a row it was 12+ ounces.
  24. Hey Chris, Steve and All, I still remember sitting at Starbucks here in Surprise, Arizona talking with Steve and Dennis about making the trip to Jack Wade. At times I sure wish I was single and free where I could break away for long prospecting trips. I sure miss those times, but then again I would never give up the times I have shared with my family and young Daughter. Searching for gold has been a big part of my life growing up, but at some point I have to remember I have other priorities that are more important now. Chris - One year Glenn and I were at Moore Creek and we hiked many miles down creek where Glenn was having great success. On one of the piles Glenn called me over and said he just found a 3 ounce gold/quartz specimen right on top of a big pile. Someone the day prior (we guessed) dug a huge hole, down about 2 foot in depth and then abandoned the target once it was out of the hole. We mentioned it back at camp, but no one really wanted to admit to it, but who would .... Steve - Thanks for your ongoing report. I will check out the link from time to time to see any updates. When you get back home, copy/paste a final report over here if you would. Wishing you much more success with the Minelab SDC 2300. It's a great metal detector, but I have to find some more batteries (still researching). Talk with you all later, Rob Allison
